"Joyous Noel" for orchestra and handbells

"Joyous Noel" by Steven Amundson "2002"

Listen to a sample of Amundson's holiday composition for symphony orchestra featuring a 5-octave handbell choir. It is also available for chamber orchestra and handbells, or symphony orchestra alone. Joyous Noel was premiered at the 2002 St. Olaf Christmas Festival and broadcast on National Public Radio in December of the same year. This festive work dances with rhythmic energy and employs rich orchestral color. It hints at Joy to the World, presents an original hymn, and provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase your local handbell choir while expanding your audience. The rental set includes parts for conductor and symphony or chamber orchestra. The handbell parts are available for purchase.

Joyous Noel is available for three different instrumental combinations:

Symphony orchestra with handbell choir
Instrumentation:

3322/4331/ harp, timp + 2 perc, strings

Chamber orchestra with handbell choir
Instrumentation:
flute, pic, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, 2 hn, 1 trpt, 1 trb, timp+2, harp, strings.

Symphony orchestra alone
Instrumentation:

3322/4331/ harp, timp + 2 perc, strings

Conductor's Score

"Finding Glories Ring and Joyous Noel for handbells and orchestra was like striking a gold mine. These original compositions were challenging to work on and perform. We played with a top-notch orchestra, so we really wanted pieces that would be great for the orchestra as well as for the handbells. These two pieces were perfect. This was the first time that the symphony had handbells in their annual Christmas concert, so we were excited and honored. Being able to play Amundson's pieces was a highlight of the concert."  Alan Lohr, Director  Carolina Bronze
